Then the chief priests, scribes, and elders gathered again and sent word to Nicodemus, saying:

Council said:

“You are a teacher of Israel and a man of learning.
You saw Jesus and spoke with Him. What is your report?”

Nicodemus stood among them and said:

Nicodemus said:

“You yourselves have heard, as I have, that this Jesus did signs and wonders.
He gave sight to the blind, made the lame walk, cleansed lepers, and raised the dead.
You saw it, yet you condemned Him.”

Then one of the Pharisees answered:

Pharisee said:

“Do you also believe in Him now?”

Nicodemus replied:

Nicodemus said:

“Indeed, He fulfilled the signs of the Messiah as the prophets foretold.
You have read it yourselves: ‘The lame shall leap, the blind shall see, and the dead shall rise.’
And these things He has done before your very eyes.”

The council became furious and said:

Council said:

“You are His disciple. You are no longer one of us.”

But Nicodemus answered:

Nicodemus said:

“If my words are false, show me where I have erred.
But if they are true, why do you condemn the truth?”

Then another man stood up—Gamaliel, a teacher of the Law respected by all—and said:

Gamaliel said:

“Be careful, O men of Israel, how you deal with these matters.
If this movement is of human origin, it will fail.
But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop it, and you may even be found opposing God.”

So the council was divided.
Some wanted to silence Nicodemus and Gamaliel, but others feared the people,
for many had begun to believe in Jesus as the risen Messiah.

And word of these events reached many regions beyond Judea.
The apostles continued to preach boldly, and the name of Jesus was glorified.
